Some May Be Optimistic About CSN Mineração's (BVMF:CMIN3) Earnings
Shareholders appeared unconcerned with CSN Mineração S.A.'s (BVMF:CMIN3) lackluster earnings report last week. Our analysis suggests that while the profits are soft, the foundations of the business are strong.
Examining Cashflow Against CSN Mineração's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
For the year to June 2025, CSN Mineração had an accrual ratio of -0.52. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of R$5.6b, well over the R$2.22b it reported in profit. CSN Mineração's free cash flow actually declined over the last year, which is disappointing, like non-biodegradable balloons.

Our Take On CSN Mineração's Profit Performance
Happily for shareholders, CSN Mineração produced plenty of free cash flow to back up its statutory profit numbers. Based on this observation, we consider it possible that CSN Mineração's statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! Unfortunately, though, its earnings per share actually fell back over the last year. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing CSN Mineração at this point in time. For example, CSN Mineração has 3 warning signs (and 2 which are concerning) we think you should know about.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of CSN Mineração's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. Some people consider a high return on equity to be a good sign of a quality business.
