Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Direcional Engenharia (BVMF:DIRR3). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Direcional Engenharia's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Direcional Engenharia has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. It's good to see that Direcional Engenharia's EPS have grown from R$0.68 to R$0.76 over twelve months. That's a 12% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Direcional Engenharia maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 3.0% to R$1.5b. That's a real positive.

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. Actually, with 35% of the company to their names, insiders are profoundly invested in the business.
