We Think That There Are Some Issues For Valid Soluções (BVMF:VLID3) Beyond Its Promising Earnings
Valid Soluções S.A.'s (BVMF:VLID3) robust recent earnings didn't do much to move the stock. However the statutory profit number doesn't tell the whole story, and we have found some factors which might be of concern to shareholders.

As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
For the year to March 2025, Valid Soluções had an accrual ratio of -0.11. Therefore, its statutory earnings were quite a lot less than its free cashflow. In fact, it had free cash flow of R$506m in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of R$319.8m. Valid Soluções' free cash flow actually declined over the last year, which is disappointing, like non-biodegradable balloons. Having said that, there is more to the story. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
While the accrual ratio might bode well, we also note that Valid Soluções' profit was boosted by unusual items worth R$106m in the last twelve months. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. We can see that Valid Soluções' positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to March 2025. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On Valid Soluções' Profit Performance
In conclusion, Valid Soluções' accrual ratio suggests its statutory earnings are of good quality, but on the other hand the profits were boosted by unusual items. Having considered these factors, we don't think Valid Soluções' statutory profits give an overly harsh view of the business.
