Billboard AD (BUL:BBRD) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 80% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in Bulgaria have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider Billboard AD as a highly attractive investment with its 3.8x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.

Billboard AD certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Billboard AD's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 119% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 1,597% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 20% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it odd that Billboard AD is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Billboard AD's P/E

Even after such a strong price move, Billboard AD's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Billboard AD currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Billboard AD (of which 2 don't sit too well with us!) you should know about.
