Albena AD's (BUL:ALB) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Albena AD (BUL:ALB) has announced that the dividend on 20th of August will be increased to BGN0.20, which will be 54% higher than last year's payment of BGN0.13 which covered the same period. This takes the annual payment to 0.5% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.
Albena AD's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Before making this announcement, Albena AD was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 1.1% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 5.6% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Albena AD Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
The company has maintained a consistent dividend for a few years now, but we would like to see a longer track record before relying on it. The annual payment during the last 3 years was BGN0.10 in 2022, and the most recent fiscal year payment was BGN0.13. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.1% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing as a reasonable rate, which we like. However, investors will probably want to see a longer track record before they consider Albena AD to be a consistent dividend paying stock.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Although it's important to note that Albena AD's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time. While growth may be thin on the ground, Albena AD could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.
In Summary
Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
