Proximus (EBR:PROX) Has Announced A Dividend Of €0.35
Proximus PLC's (EBR:PROX) investors are due to receive a payment of €0.35 per share on 10th of December. This means that the annual payment will be 5.2% of the current stock price, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Proximus' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Before making this announcement, Proximus was paying out quite a large proportion of both earnings and cash flow, with the dividend being 104% of cash flows. Paying out such a high proportion of cash flows certainly exposes the company to cutting the dividend if cash flows were to reduce.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 7.8% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 53%, which would make us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend, despite the levels currently being quite high.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The first annual payment during the last 10 years was €2.18 in 2011, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €1.20. The dividend has shrunk at around 5.8% a year during that period. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
With a relatively unstable dividend, and a poor history of shrinking dividends, it's even more important to see if EPS is growing. Over the past five years, it looks as though Proximus' EPS has declined at around 2.8% a year. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
Proximus' Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. The track record isn't great, and the payments are a bit high to be considered sustainable. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
