Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For Azelis Group NV's (EBR:AZE) Shares
Azelis Group NV's (EBR:AZE) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.3x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in Belgium, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 14x and even P/E's below 8x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
Recent times haven't been advantageous for Azelis Group as its earnings have been rising slower than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this lacklustre earnings performance will improve markedly. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For Azelis Group?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Azelis Group's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 156% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its uninspiring short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the twelve analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 12% each year over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 14% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.
In light of this, it's curious that Azelis Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Azelis Group's P/E?
Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of Azelis Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
