Pureprofile Ltd (ASX:PPL) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 63% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Pureprofile may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x, since almost half of all companies in the IT industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 2.4x and even P/S higher than 6x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Has Pureprofile Performed Recently?

Pureprofile's revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Pureprofile?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Pureprofile's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 10% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 61% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 16% per annum as estimated by the one analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 20% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Pureprofile's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Pureprofile's P/S

Despite Pureprofile's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of Pureprofile's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
