DUG Technology Ltd's (ASX:DUG) 26% Cheaper Price Remains In Tune With Earnings

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the DUG Technology Ltd (ASX:DUG) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 27% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, given close to half the companies in Australia have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 20x, you may still consider DUG Technology as a stock to avoid entirely with its 43.6x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, DUG Technology's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is DUG Technology's Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like DUG Technology's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 45% decrease to the company's bottom line. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 52% per year over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 19% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that DUG Technology's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

DUG Technology's shares may have retreated, but its P/E is still flying high. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that DUG Technology maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
