A Look At Talisman Mining's(ASX:TLM) Total Shareholder Returns

The main aim of stock picking is to find the market-beating stocks. But every investor is virtually certain to have both over-performing and under-performing stocks. At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in Talisman Mining Limited (ASX:TLM), since the last five years saw the share price fall 79%. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 17% in the last three months.

Talisman Mining recorded just AU$204,000 in revenue over the last twelve months, which isn't really enough for us to consider it to have a proven product. This state of affairs suggests that venture capitalists won't provide funds on attractive terms. So it seems shareholders are too busy dreaming about the progress to come than dwelling on the current (lack of) revenue. It seems likely some shareholders believe that Talisman Mining will find or develop a valuable new mine before too long.

As a general rule, if a company doesn't have much revenue, and it loses money, then it is a high risk investment. You should be aware that there is always a chance that this sort of company will need to issue more shares to raise money to continue pursuing its business plan. While some such companies go on to make revenue, profits, and generate value, others get hyped up by hopeful naifs before eventually going bankrupt. It certainly is a dangerous place to invest, as Talisman Mining investors might realise.

When it last reported its balance sheet in June 2020, Talisman Mining had cash in excess of all liabilities of AU$12m. While that's nothing to panic about, there is some possibility the company will raise more capital, especially if profits are not imminent. We'd venture that shareholders are concerned about the need for more capital, because the share price has dropped 12% per year, over 5 years. You can see in the image below, how Talisman Mining's cash levels have changed over time (click to see the values).

It can be extremely risky to invest in a company that doesn't even have revenue. There's no way to know its value easily. Would it bother you if insiders were selling the stock? I'd like that just about as much as I like to drink milk and fruit juice mixed together. It costs nothing but a moment of your time to see if we are picking up on any insider selling.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Talisman Mining's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Talisman Mining hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of -17% exceeds its share price return of -79%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.

A Different Perspective

Talisman Mining shareholders gained a total return of 2.1% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 3% per year, over five years. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Talisman Mining better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 4 warning signs for Talisman Mining (2 are potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
