SciDev Limited (ASX:SDV) Surges 25% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

SciDev Limited (ASX:SDV) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 25% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The annual gain comes to 133% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

Although its price has surged higher, SciDev's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Chemicals industry in Australia, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.1x and even P/S above 27x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How SciDev Has Been Performing

Recent times have been advantageous for SciDev as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think SciDev's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For SciDev?

SciDev's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 22%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 157% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 10% per year as estimated by the lone analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 452% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that SciDev's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

SciDev's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that SciDev maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
