It's Down 29% But Nufarm Limited (ASX:NUF) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

The Nufarm Limited (ASX:NUF) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 29%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 44% in that time.

Following the heavy fall in price, Nufarm may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Chemicals industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 1.6x and even P/S higher than 17x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Nufarm Performed Recently?

Nufarm could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Nufarm's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

Nufarm's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 3.5% last year. Still, lamentably revenue has fallen 8.9% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 11% each year during the coming three years according to the ten analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 4.5% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Nufarm's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What We Can Learn From Nufarm's P/S?

The southerly movements of Nufarm's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

A look at Nufarm's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
