Austral Gold Limited (ASX:AGD) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 27% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

Austral Gold Limited (ASX:AGD) shares have retraced a considerable 27% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. The good news is that in the last year, the stock has shone bright like a diamond, gaining 216%.

After such a large drop in price, Austral Gold may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 61.6x and even P/S higher than 421x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Austral Gold Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Austral Gold over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. Those who are bullish on Austral Gold will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Austral Gold?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Austral Gold's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 23%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 43% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 147% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

With this information, we are not surprised that Austral Gold is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On Austral Gold's P/S

Austral Gold's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Austral Gold confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
