Plato Income Maximiser Doesn't Earn Enough To Cover Its Payments
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. At the time of the last dividend payment, Plato Income Maximiser was paying out a very large proportion of what it was earning and 135% of cash flows. This is certainly a risk factor, as reduced cash flows could force the company to pay a lower dividend.
If the company can't turn things around, EPS could fall by 4.3% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could reach 101%, which could put the dividend under pressure if earnings don't start to improve.
Plato Income Maximiser's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Even in its relatively short history, the company has reduced the dividend at least once. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. The dividend has gone from an annual total of A$0.054 in 2017 to the most recent total annual payment of A$0.066. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 2.9% per annum over that time. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Plato Income Maximiser has seen earnings per share falling at 4.3% per year over the last five years. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits.
We should note that Plato Income Maximiser has issued stock equal to 18% of shares outstanding. Regularly doing this can be detrimental - it's hard to grow dividends per share when new shares are regularly being created.
Plato Income Maximiser's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. The track record isn't great, and the payments are a bit high to be considered sustainable. We don't think Plato Income Maximiser is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
