Aristocrat Leisure's (ASX:ALL) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Aristocrat Leisure Limited (ASX:ALL) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 8th of December to A$0.49. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 1.7%.
Aristocrat Leisure's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Aristocrat Leisure's earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 75.1%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 31%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The dividend has gone from an annual total of A$0.16 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of A$0.98. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 20% over that duration. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. It's not great to see that Aristocrat Leisure's earnings per share has fallen at approximately 2.3% per year over the past five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
Our Thoughts On Aristocrat Leisure's Dividend
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Aristocrat Leisure's payments are rock solid. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think Aristocrat Leisure is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Without at least some growth in earnings per share over time, the dividend will eventually come under pressure either from competition or inflation. Businesses can change though, and we think it would make sense to see what analysts are forecasting for the company. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
