When close to half the companies operating in the Professional Services industry in Australia have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.3x, you may consider Ignite Limited (ASX:IGN) as an attractive investment with its 0.1x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Ignite Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Ignite over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Ignite's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Ignite's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Ignite's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 7.7%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 11% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 2.4% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

In light of this, it's understandable that Ignite's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does Ignite's P/S Mean For Investors?

Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of Ignite confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
