Investors Continue Waiting On Sidelines For Cardno Limited (ASX:CDD)
Cardno Limited's (ASX:CDD) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x may look like a pretty appealing investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the Commercial Services industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Cardno's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Cardno has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think this respectable revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Cardno would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.5% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 53% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 4.8% shows it's noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Cardno's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Cardno's P/S?
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We're very surprised to see Cardno currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
