FACC AG's (VIE:FACC) P/E Is Still On The Mark Following 26% Share Price Bounce

Despite an already strong run, FACC AG (VIE:FACC) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 31% in the last year.

Since its price has surged higher, FACC may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 60.5x, since almost half of all companies in Austria have P/E ratios under 15x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, FACC's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is FACC's Growth Trending?

FACC's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 38%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 91% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 8.9% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that FACC's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

The strong share price surge has got FACC's P/E rushing to great heights as well. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that FACC maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

Having said that, be aware FACC is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant.
