Alaska Power & Telephone Company Receives Alaska Energy Authority Approval for $4.95 Million Renewable Energy Fund Grants The Alaska State Legislature has approved two Alaska Energy Authority Renewable Energy Fund grants totaling more than $4.95 million to expand clean, affordable energy in communities served by Alaska Power & Telephone Company. The appropriations, included in the State of Alaska's Fiscal Year 2027 budget recently signed by Governor Michael Dunleavy, provide $2,000,000 for expansion of the Goat Lake Hydroelectric Project reservoir and $2,953,085 for a solar and battery system serving the remote interior Alaska community of Allakaket. The $2 million Renewable Energy Fund grant will help fund an expansion of the Goat Lake reservoir, increasing water storage capacity, reducing reliance on diesel generation, and providing greater long-term energy cost stability for the region. Under a proposed independent power producer structure, Allakaket Village will own Renewable Energy Fund-funded solar and battery assets and sell power to Alaska Power & Telephone Company as a lower-cost alternative to diesel generation. Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium will serve as the project developer, working in conjunction with Alaska Power & Telephone Company's engineers. Due to the high cost of transporting diesel fuel to the community, Allakaket residents face some of the highest energy costs in the state. This project represents an important step toward reducing those costs and improving opportunities for local families, community facilities, and businesses. Renewable energy projects are essential to rural Alaska. Being able to bring a solar and battery project to Allakaket with the support and technical expertise of the Alaska Energy Authority could not come at a better time given the high cost of fuel. Alaska Power & Telephone Company Announces Chief Executive Officer Changes The Board of Directors of Alaska Power & Telephone Company announced that William D. Marks will become CEO effective February 1, upon the successful completion of their succession plan to replace Michael Garrett, who previously announced his planned retirement after more than 34 years with the Company. Garrett will serve as the senior advisor to Marks through March 31, 2024, to affect a seamless transition. Marks brings to AP&T a track record as a successful executive, thought leader and visionary in the cable TV and satellite industries for over thirty years. Notably, he was a founder and President of DBS Direct/DIRECTV, which was the first direct-to-home satellite television network, and CEO of Seamobile. In 2007, Marks won the prestigious Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for his role as the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Seamobile.
