How Much Are Masco Corporation (NYSE:MAS) Insiders Taking Off The Table?
It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Masco Corporation (NYSE:MAS).
What Is Insider Buying?
Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.
We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

Masco Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The VP, Controller & Chief Accounting Officer, John Lindow, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$659k worth of shares at a price of US$39.16 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even slightly below the current price of US$39.83. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 33.7% of John Lindow's holding.
In the last twelve months insiders netted US$2.6m for 67359 shares sold. Masco insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. Does Masco Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 0.7% of Masco shares, worth about US$84m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
