Are Insiders Selling PNM Resources, Inc. (NYSE:PNM) Stock?
It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in PNM Resources, Inc. (NYSE:PNM).
What Is Insider Selling?
Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At PNM Resources
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Executive VP & CFO, Charles Eldred, sold US$581k worth of shares at a price of US$45.23 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$50.85). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 11.3% of Charles Eldred's holding.
In the last twelve months insiders netted US$1.1m for 24311 shares sold. In the last year PNM Resources insiders didn't buy any company stock. Insider Ownership
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 1.1% of PNM Resources shares, worth about US$43m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About PNM Resources Insiders?
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded PNM Resources shares in the last quarter. Still, the insider transactions at PNM Resources in the last 12 months are not very heartening. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. Of course, the future is what matters most.
