Barings and Goodman Group Reportedly in Talks for Moorabbin Airport Deal The Australian arm of international funds manager Barings and a consortium of four major investment funds are in talks to buy Melbourne's Moorabbin Airport (Moorabbin Airport Corporation Pty Ltd.) from industrial property company Goodman Group (ASX:GMG) and its funds for more than $1,500 million. The transaction has been quietly negotiated by Barings and Goodman with the superannuation funds, including Aware Super and Rest Super, alongside two undisclosed funds, brought in amid strong demand for airports among institutional investors. The deal, which is pending approvals, would also be a coup for Barings, which has been stepping up its presence in Australian property and has about $9,000 million worth of local assets, including experience in airports. Barings, which sports a near $700,000 million global investment network, is looking to pick up the airport at a time when Goodman is selling assets. It is selling partly in order to fund the rollout of its new data centres around the world, although the bulk of the Moorabbin precinct is held in its flagship unlisted fund. GIC Reportedly in Talks to Invest in Goodman’s Data Centres Singapore's GIC (GIC Private Limited) is considering a proposal to invest in data centre assets owned by Australian property firm Goodman Group (ASX:GMG), the Australian Financial Review reported. Dealmakers at GIC have discussed options in recent weeks with Goodman's internal team over a potential investment in part of its data centre portfolio. The talks are at an early stage and no agreement has been reached, said the report. Chinese Test Investor Reportedly Appetite for Their $5 Billion Goodman Stake Goodman Group (ASX:GMG) is back in the spotlight, with suggestions state-owned investor China Investment Corporation could be testing the market to sell down its $5 billion-plus interest in the $62 billion Australian industrial property powerhouse. CIC owns about 8.9% of Goodman shares and also co-invests in its industrial property funds which own sheds, warehouses, data centres and distribution centres around the world. It is understood institutional investors have received approaches from brokers, testing their interest in acquiring CIC shares in Goodman and fuelling suggestions they could soon be on the block. It comes at a time when China's economy is slowing and it faces high tariffs in the US if Donald Trump is elected president in November. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that low consumption has become a headwind to China's growth because property investment, once a major component of demand, has collapsed. Goodman has historically been close to investment bank Macquarie Capital, but the last time CIC embarked on a block trade out of Goodman it called on the services of Goldman Sachs. At the time, CIC's policy was to obtain bids from three separate brokers over the price.
