Sanlam Ltd Appoints Theo Mabaso as Group Chief AI Officer Sanlam Ltd. has appointed Theo Mabaso as group chief AI officer, elevating artificial intelligence (AI) to the centre of the insurance giant's enterprise strategy. The move signals a shift by the financial services group to operationalise AI at scale, embedding it across underwriting, claims, financial advice and client engagement. It also introduces a more formalised governance layer, with dedicated oversight, structured investment and clearer capital allocation aligned to AI-driven initiatives. While retaining his role as group chief technology and information officer, Mabaso will drive and govern the firm's overall AI strategy, as it transitions from experimentation to execution. He has been instrumental in modernising Sanlam's technology stack and laying the groundwork for enterprise-wide AI adoption. His appointment builds on that foundation, positioning AI as a core lever for competitive differentiation, operational efficiency and long-term resilience. In 2025, he contributed to the B20 South Africa Digital Transformation Task Force, focusing on the role of technology in driving inclusive growth. The creation of a group chief AI officer role reflects a growing trend among large financial institutions to institutionalise AI leadership at executive level, particularly as regulatory scrutiny intensifies and the technology's impact on decision-making becomes more material. New minor risk - Shareholder dilution The company's shareholders have been diluted in the past year. Increase in shares outstanding: 5.2% This is considered a minor risk. Shareholder dilution occurs when there is an increase in the number of shares on issue that is not proportionally distributed between all shareholders. Often due to the company raising equity capital or some options being converted into stock. All else being equal, if there are more shares outstanding then each existing share will be entitled to a lower proportion of the company's total earnings, thus reducing earnings per share (EPS). While dilution might not always result in lower EPS (like if the company is using the capital to fund an EPS accretive acquisition) in a lot cases it does, along with lower dividends per share and less voting power at shareholder meetings. This is currently the only risk that has been identified for the company. Tillkännagivande • Jun 21
