Mr Price Group (JSE:MRP) Is Paying Out Less In Dividends Than Last Year
Mr Price Group Limited's (JSE:MRP) dividend is being reduced by 9.3% to ZAR2.84 per share on 18th of December, in comparison to last year's comparable payment of ZAR3.13. This means that the annual payment will be 4.8% of the current stock price, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Mr Price Group's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Prior to this announcement, Mr Price Group's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 25.7%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 52%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ZAR3.98 in 2013 to the most recent total annual payment of ZAR7.6. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 6.7% a year over that time. A reasonable rate of dividend growth is good to see, but we're wary that the dividend history is not as solid as we'd like, having been cut at least once.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Mr Price Group hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years. Growth of 0.4% per annum is not particularly high, which might explain why the company is paying out a higher proportion of earnings. This could mean the dividend doesn't have the growth potential we look for going into the future.
In Summary
Overall, while it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, we think the company is now in a good position to make consistent payments going into the future. The dividend has been at reasonable levels historically, but that hasn't translated into a consistent payment. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 2 warning signs for Mr Price Group that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
