HomeChoice International's (JSE:HIL) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year

The board of HomeChoice International plc (JSE:HIL) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 17% on the 14th of April to ZAR0.97, up from last year's comparable payment of ZAR0.83. This takes the dividend yield to 5.7%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

HomeChoice International's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, HomeChoice International was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.

EPS is set to fall by 1.9% over the next 12 months if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 47%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was ZAR1.61, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ZAR1.78. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 1.0% a year over that time. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Although it's important to note that HomeChoice International's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think HomeChoice International will make a great income stock. While HomeChoice International is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. To that end, HomeChoice International has 4 warning signs (and 2 which are concerning) we think you should know about.
