New Jersey Resources Insiders Sold US$752k Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
New Jersey Resources Corporation (NYSE:NJR) shareholders may have reason to be concerned, as several insiders sold their shares over the past year. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

New Jersey Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Jane Kenny, for US$350k worth of shares, at about US$42.44 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$47.02, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 26% of Jane Kenny's stake.

New Jersey Resources Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last three months saw significant insider selling at New Jersey Resources. In total, Senior VP & COO of New Jersey Natural Gas Patrick Migliaccio dumped US$115k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.
Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 0.5% of New Jersey Resources shares, worth about US$22m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
