Frontier Group Holdings, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ULCC) 26% Price Boost Is Out Of Tune With Revenues
Frontier Group Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:ULCC) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 26% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 7.0% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think Frontier Group Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United States' Airlines industry is similar at about 0.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Frontier Group Holdings Performed Recently?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Frontier Group Holdings' revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Frontier Group Holdings' to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Although pleasingly revenue has lifted 171% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been great for the company, but investors will want to ask why it has slowed to such an extent.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 10% as estimated by the ten analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 51% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Frontier Group Holdings' P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Frontier Group Holdings' P/S?
Frontier Group Holdings appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Given that Frontier Group Holdings' revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. When we see companies with a relatively weaker revenue outlook compared to the industry, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/S lower. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
