Knowles (NYSE:KN) Hasn't Managed To Accelerate Its Returns

If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Knowles (NYSE:KN) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Knowles, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.051 = US$55m ÷ (US$1.2b - US$107m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).

Thus, Knowles has an ROCE of 5.1%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Electronic industry average of 12%.

So How Is Knowles' ROCE Trending?

We're a bit concerned with the trends, because the business is applying 24% less capital than it was five years ago and returns on that capital have stayed flat. This indicates to us that assets are being sold and thus the business is likely shrinking, which you'll remember isn't the typical ingredients for an up-and-coming multi-bagger. In addition to that, since the ROCE doesn't scream "quality" at 5.1%, it's hard to get excited about these developments.

The Bottom Line

It's a shame to see that Knowles is effectively shrinking in terms of its capital base. And with the stock having returned a mere 13% in the last five years to shareholders, you could argue that they're aware of these lackluster trends. Therefore, if you're looking for a multi-bagger, we'd propose looking at other options.

While Knowles doesn't shine too bright in this respect, it's still worth seeing if the company is trading at attractive prices. You can find that out with our FREE intrinsic value estimation on our platform.

I won't rely solely on Retail Sales. It only tell you what was spent. Credit data is the one that tells you how. For me the latter is more important than the former.
