TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) Stock Catapults 29% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Published
NasdaqGS:TTMI

TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 66%.

Even after such a large jump in price, TTM Technologies may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Electronic industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How TTM Technologies Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, TTM Technologies has been doing relatively well. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like TTM Technologies' to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 3.4% last year. The latest three year period has also seen a 8.6% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 6.8% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 9.1%, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that TTM Technologies' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On TTM Technologies' P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift TTM Technologies' P/S close to the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of TTM Technologies' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
