There's No Escaping Turtle Beach Corporation's (NASDAQ:TBCH) Muted Revenues Despite A 25% Share Price Rise

Those holding Turtle Beach Corporation (NASDAQ:TBCH) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 25% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 2.3% isn't as attractive.

Although its price has surged higher, Turtle Beach may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x, since almost half of all companies in the Tech industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Turtle Beach's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Turtle Beach has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue performance might be less impressive moving forward. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

Keen to find out how analysts think Turtle Beach's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Turtle Beach's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 45% last year. The latest three year period has also seen a 19% overall rise in revenue, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 5.4% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 5.3% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this information, we are not surprised that Turtle Beach is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What Does Turtle Beach's P/S Mean For Investors?

Despite Turtle Beach's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Turtle Beach's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Turtle Beach's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
