Socket Mobile, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SCKT) 27% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up
Despite an already strong run, Socket Mobile, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCKT) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Looking further back, the 12% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Socket Mobile's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United States' Tech industry is similar at about 1x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Socket Mobile's Recent Performance Look Like?
The recent revenue growth at Socket Mobile would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to only match most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from rising. If not, then at least existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Socket Mobile's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 2.9% gain to the company's revenues. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 16% overall drop in revenue. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 6.6% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Socket Mobile's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
The Final Word
Socket Mobile appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
The fact that Socket Mobile currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
