Quantum Corporation's (NASDAQ:QMCO) 30% Dip In Price Shows Sentiment Is Matching Revenues
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Quantum Corporation (NASDAQ:QMCO) share price has dived 30% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Longer-term, the stock has been solid despite a difficult 30 days, gaining 24% in the last year.
Following the heavy fall in price, Quantum may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Tech industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.2x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Quantum's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Quantum's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Quantum's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 18% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 23% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 0.2% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 5.2%.
In light of this, it's understandable that Quantum's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From Quantum's P/S?
The southerly movements of Quantum's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Quantum's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
