Optical Cable Corporation's (NASDAQ:OCC) Share Price Boosted 32% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too

Optical Cable Corporation (NASDAQ:OCC) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 32% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 9.6% isn't as attractive.

Although its price has surged higher, it would still be understandable if you think Optical Cable is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.4x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Communications industry have P/S ratios above 1.2x. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Optical Cable Performed Recently?

For instance, Optical Cable's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Optical Cable?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Optical Cable would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 7.6% decrease to the company's top line. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 13% in total. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 11% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

In light of this, it's understandable that Optical Cable's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

The Bottom Line On Optical Cable's P/S

Optical Cable's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Optical Cable revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
