We're Keeping An Eye On Neonode's (NASDAQ:NEON) Cash Burn Rate
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?
So should Neonode (NASDAQ:NEON) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

When Might Neonode Run Out Of Money?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. As at December 2023, Neonode had cash of US$16m and no debt. Importantly, its cash burn was US$6.4m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of about 2.5 years from December 2023. That's decent, giving the company a couple years to develop its business. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Well Is Neonode Growing?
On balance, we think it's mildly positive that Neonode trimmed its cash burn by 6.3% over the last twelve months. But the revenue dip of 22% in the same period was a bit concerning. In light of the data above, we're fairly sanguine about the business growth trajectory. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
Can Neonode Raise More Cash Easily?
Even though it seems like Neonode is developing its business nicely, we still like to consider how easily it could raise more money to accelerate growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Neonode has a market capitalisation of US$28m and burnt through US$6.4m last year, which is 23% of the company's market value. That's fairly notable cash burn, so if the company had to sell shares to cover the cost of another year's operations, shareholders would suffer some costly dilution.
How Risky Is Neonode's Cash Burn Situation?
Even though its falling revenue makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Neonode's cash runway was relatively promising. While we're the kind of investors who are always a bit concerned about the risks involved with cash burning companies, the metrics we have discussed in this article leave us relatively comfortable about Neonode's situation.
