There's No Escaping Airgain, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AIRG) Muted Revenues Despite A 46% Share Price Rise
Those holding Airgain, Inc. (NASDAQ:AIRG) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 46% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 44% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Airgain may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x, considering almost half of all companies in the Electronic industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Airgain Performed Recently?
Airgain could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.
Keen to find out how analysts think Airgain's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. How Is Airgain's Revenue Growth Trending?
Airgain's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 6.1%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 35% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 11% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 7.0%, which paints a poor picture.
In light of this, it's understandable that Airgain's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Airgain's P/S close to the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
It's clear to see that Airgain maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
