Sphere 3D Corp.'s (NASDAQ:ANY) Shares Bounce 36% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
The Sphere 3D Corp. (NASDAQ:ANY) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 36%. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 19% is also fairly reasonable.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Sphere 3D may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 5.2x and even P/S higher than 13x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Sphere 3D's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Sphere 3D has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Sphere 3D's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 122%. This great performance means it was also able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a tremendous job of growing revenue over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 18% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 25%.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Sphere 3D's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From Sphere 3D's P/S?
Sphere 3D's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Sphere 3D's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Sphere 3D's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
