Investor Optimism Abounds Silicon Laboratories Inc. (NASDAQ:SLAB) But Growth Is Lacking
You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 5.8x Silicon Laboratories Inc. (NASDAQ:SLAB) is a stock to potentially avoid, seeing as almost half of all the Semiconductor companies in the United States have P/S ratios under 4.6x and even P/S lower than 2x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Silicon Laboratories Has Been Performing
Silicon Laboratories hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.
Keen to find out how analysts think Silicon Laboratories' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Silicon Laboratories?
Silicon Laboratories' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 38%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 17% in total. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 22% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 27% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in consideration, we believe it doesn't make sense that Silicon Laboratories' P/S is outpacing its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On Silicon Laboratories' P/S
While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
It comes as a surprise to see Silicon Laboratories trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
