Kopin (NASDAQ:KOPN) shareholders are up 11% this past week, but still in the red over the last three years
Kopin Corporation (NASDAQ:KOPN) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 21% in the last month. But the last three years have seen a terrible decline. To wit, the share price sky-dived 86% in that time. So it sure is nice to see a bit of an improvement. But the more important question is whether the underlying business can justify a higher price still. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.
While the last three years has been tough for Kopin shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

Kopin wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
In the last three years Kopin saw its revenue shrink by 4.2% per year. That is not a good result. Having said that the 23% annualized share price decline highlights the risk of investing in unprofitable companies. This business clearly needs to grow revenues if it is to perform as investors hope. There's no more than a snowball's chance in hell that share price will head back to its old highs, in the short term.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 35% in the last year, Kopin shareholders lost 45%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 10%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Kopin has 4 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
