Earnings Working Against Designer Brands Inc.'s (NYSE:DBI) Share Price Following 29% Dive
The Designer Brands Inc. (NYSE:DBI) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 29%. Longer-term shareholders would now have taken a real hit with the stock declining 9.5% in the last year.
Even after such a large drop in price, Designer Brands' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 4.8x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 17x and even P/E's above 33x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, Designer Brands has been very sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. If not, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Designer Brands' to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 13%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 47% during the coming year according to the four analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 10%, which paints a poor picture.
In light of this, it's understandable that Designer Brands' P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
