Many Academy Sports and Outdoors, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASO) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Academy Sports and Outdoors Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President, Samuel Johnson, for US$650k worth of shares, at about US$50.03 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$54.76). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 16% of Samuel Johnson's holding.

Insiders At Academy Sports and Outdoors Have Sold Stock Recently

Over the last three months, we've seen a bit of insider selling at Academy Sports and Outdoors. Independent Director Jeffrey Tweedy divested only US$34k worth of shares in that time. It's not great to see insider selling, nor the lack of recent buyers. But the selling simply isn't sufficiently substantial to be of much use as a signal.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 1.6% of Academy Sports and Outdoors shares, worth about US$65m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
