Here's Why We Think Invitation Homes (NYSE:INVH) Is Well Worth Watching
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Invitation Homes (NYSE:INVH), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Invitation Homes Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
In the last three years Invitation Homes's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, Invitation Homes's EPS soared from US$0.36 to US$0.48, in just one year. That's a impressive gain of 33%.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Invitation Homes shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 26% to 28%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Invitation Homes Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Invitation Homes has a market capitalization of US$23b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at US$52m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That's certainly enough to make me think that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Invitation Homes, with market caps over US$8.0b, is about US$13m.
Invitation Homes offered total compensation worth US$9.7m to its CEO in the year to . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Does Invitation Homes Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
For growth investors like me, Invitation Homes's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. If that's not enough, consider also that the CEO pay is quite reasonable, and insiders are well-invested alongside other shareholders. Each to their own, but I think all this makes Invitation Homes look rather interesting indeed. It's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
