Newmark Group, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:NMRK) Shares Bounce 27% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
Despite an already strong run, Newmark Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:NMRK) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 27% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Newmark Group may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, since almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.9x and even P/S higher than 9x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Newmark Group's Recent Performance Look Like?
Newmark Group hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Newmark Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 24%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 20% in total. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 8.0% per year over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 11% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why Newmark Group's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
Newmark Group's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Newmark Group maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
