Zymeworks (NASDAQ:ZYME) shareholders are up 11% this past week, but still in the red over the last three years
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Zymeworks Inc. (NASDAQ:ZYME) share price has gained 17% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been stomach churning. The share price has sunk like a leaky ship, down 72% in that time. Arguably, the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. Only time will tell if the company can sustain the turnaround.
While the stock has risen 11% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

Because Zymeworks made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
In the last three years, Zymeworks saw its revenue grow by 63% per year, compound. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. So why has the share priced crashed 20% per year, in the same time? The share price makes us wonder if there is an issue with profitability. Sometimes fast revenue growth doesn't lead to profits. If the company is low on cash, it may have to raise capital soon.

A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Zymeworks shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 32% over one year. That certainly beats the loss of about 10% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Zymeworks better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for Zymeworks (1 is a bit unpleasant) that you should be aware of.
