We're Hopeful That Solid Biosciences (NASDAQ:SLDB) Will Use Its Cash Wisely
We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, Solid Biosciences (NASDAQ:SLDB) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 114%. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.
In light of its strong share price run, we think now is a good time to investigate how risky Solid Biosciences' cash burn is. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

When Might Solid Biosciences Run Out Of Money?
You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. As at December 2020, Solid Biosciences had cash of US$155m and no debt. In the last year, its cash burn was US$57m. That means it had a cash runway of about 2.7 years as of December 2020. That's decent, giving the company a couple years to develop its business. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Is Solid Biosciences' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Because Solid Biosciences isn't currently generating revenue, we consider it an early-stage business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. While it hardly paints a picture of imminent growth, the fact that it has reduced its cash burn by 41% over the last year suggests some degree of prudence. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Hard Would It Be For Solid Biosciences To Raise More Cash For Growth?
While Solid Biosciences is showing a solid reduction in its cash burn, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Solid Biosciences has a market capitalisation of US$547m and burnt through US$57m last year, which is 11% of the company's market value. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.
Is Solid Biosciences' Cash Burn A Worry?
As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Solid Biosciences' cash burn. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. And even though its cash burn relative to its market cap wasn't quite as impressive, it was still a positive. Looking at all the measures in this article, together, we're not worried about its rate of cash burn; the company seems well on top of its medium-term spending needs.
