Gossamer Bio, Inc. (NASDAQ:GOSS) Shares May Have Slumped 27% But Getting In Cheap Is Still Unlikely

Gossamer Bio, Inc. (NASDAQ:GOSS) shares have retraced a considerable 27% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Of course, over the longer-term many would still wish they owned shares as the stock's price has soared 136% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has dipped substantially, Gossamer Bio may still be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 13x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs in the United States have P/S ratios under 10.1x and even P/S lower than 3x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Gossamer Bio Has Been Performing

Gossamer Bio could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Keen to find out how analysts think Gossamer Bio's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Gossamer Bio?

Gossamer Bio's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 58%. At least revenue has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 67% per year as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 129% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, we believe it doesn't make sense that Gossamer Bio's P/S is outpacing its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What Does Gossamer Bio's P/S Mean For Investors?

Gossamer Bio's P/S remain high even after its stock plunged. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Despite analysts forecasting some poorer-than-industry revenue growth figures for Gossamer Bio, this doesn't appear to be impacting the P/S in the slightest. The weakness in the company's revenue estimate doesn't bode well for the elevated P/S, which could take a fall if the revenue sentiment doesn't improve. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.

You need to take note of risks, for example - Gossamer Bio has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
