Adaptive Biotechnologies Insiders Sold US$626k Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
Adaptive Biotechnologies Corporation (NASDAQ:ADPT) shareholders may have reason to be concerned, as several insiders sold their shares over the past year. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Adaptive Biotechnologies Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Co-Founder, Chad Robins, sold US$167k worth of shares at a price of US$3.44 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$6.81, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 1.9% of Chad Robins's holding.
In the last year Adaptive Biotechnologies insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Have Adaptive Biotechnologies Insiders Traded Recently?
In the last quarter VP, CFO & Principal Accounting Officer Kyle Piskel sold US$1.2k worth of equity. That's not a lot. The net selling is so small that it's hard to draw any conclusions from these recent transactions.
Insider Ownership
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Adaptive Biotechnologies insiders own 3.8% of the company, worth about US$38m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About Adaptive Biotechnologies Insiders?
While there has not been any insider buying in the last three months, there has been selling. But given the selling was modest, we're not worried. Recent sales exacerbate our caution arising from analysis of Adaptive Biotechnologies insider transactions. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. In terms of investment risks, we've identified 2 warning signs with Adaptive Biotechnologies and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
