Townsquare Media's Distributions May Be Difficult To Sustain
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Townsquare Media is not generating a profit, but its free cash flows easily cover the dividend, leaving plenty for reinvestment in the business. This gives us some comfort about the level of the dividend payments.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to expand by 70.5% over the next year. We like to see the company moving towards profitability, but this probably won't be enough for it to post positive net income this year. The positive free cash flows give us some comfort, however, that the dividend could continue to be sustained.
Townsquare Media's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Even in its relatively short history, the company has reduced the dividend at least once. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $0.30 in 2018 to the most recent total annual payment of $0.80. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 15% a year over that time. Townsquare Media has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Company Could Face Some Challenges Growing The Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. It's encouraging to see that Townsquare Media has been growing its earnings per share at 25% a year over the past five years. While the company hasn't yet recorded a profit, the growth rates are healthy. If profitability can be achieved soon and growth continues apace, this stock could certainly turn into a solid dividend payer.
Our Thoughts On Townsquare Media's Dividend
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Townsquare Media's payments are rock solid. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. To that end, Townsquare Media has 3 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
