Sohu.com Limited's (NASDAQ:SOHU) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 26%

Those holding Sohu.com Limited (NASDAQ:SOHU) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 26% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 7.7% over the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, Sohu.com may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x, considering almost half of all companies in the Entertainment industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x and even P/S higher than 6x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Sohu.com Has Been Performing

Recent times haven't been great for Sohu.com as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Sohu.com's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Sohu.com?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Sohu.com's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 2.8% last year. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 26% overall drop in revenue. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 12% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 14%.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Sohu.com's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What Does Sohu.com's P/S Mean For Investors?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Sohu.com's P/S close to the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Sohu.com's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Sohu.com's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
