Investors Should Be Encouraged By SPAR Group's (NASDAQ:SGRP) Returns On Capital
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in SPAR Group's (NASDAQ:SGRP) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for SPAR Group:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.26 = US$11m ÷ (US$95m - US$52m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).
Thus, SPAR Group has an ROCE of 26%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Media industry average of 9.1%.

The Trend Of ROCE
The trends we've noticed at SPAR Group are quite reassuring. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 26%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 39%. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at SPAR Group thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. The current liabilities has increased to 55% of total assets, so the business is now more funded by the likes of its suppliers or short-term creditors. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.
Our Take On SPAR Group's ROCE
A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what SPAR Group has. Since the stock has returned a solid 71% to shareholders over the last five years, it's fair to say investors are beginning to recognize these changes. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
