Potential Upside For Sylvamo Corporation (NYSE:SLVM) Not Without Risk
Sylvamo Corporation's (NYSE:SLVM) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 14.6x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 19x and even P/E's above 34x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Sylvamo has been struggling lately as its earnings have declined faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd want its earnings trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Sylvamo's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Sylvamo's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 29% decrease to the company's bottom line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 2.2% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 39% over the next year. With the market only predicted to deliver 15%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we find it odd that Sylvamo is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Sylvamo's P/E?
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Sylvamo's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
